Adding Mixed Numbers!

Learn to add fractions with whole numbers 🎯

🍰 Hi! I'm Cakey! Before we add mixed numbers, let's make sure we understand wholes and fractions really well!

What is a Whole? 🍫

Imagine a chocolate bar broken into 4 equal pieces.

All 4 pieces = 1 whole

When EVERY piece is there, you have 1 whole.
Two full chocolate bars = 2 wholes!

1 whole

1 whole

Key idea: A whole means all the pieces are there. Nothing is missing!
🍰 Now what if some pieces are MISSING? That's a fraction!

What is a Fraction?

A fraction is when you have only some of the pieces.

34

3 pieces out of 4

14

1 piece out of 4

Top number = how many pieces you HAVE (the coloured bits)
Bottom number = how many pieces the whole is CUT INTO

A fraction is always less than 1 whole — because some pieces are missing!

🍰 What if you have whole cakes AND a bit more? That's a mixed number!

Mixed Numbers = Wholes + Fraction

A mixed number puts a whole number and a fraction together.

1 whole

+

25

=

125

1 whole AND 2/5

The big number (1) tells you HOW MANY WHOLES you have.
The fraction (2/5) tells you the EXTRA BITS left over.

🍰 Here's the magic bit! What happens when a fraction gets ALL its pieces?

When a Fraction Becomes a Whole ✨

Watch what happens as we fill up a bar that's cut into 5 pieces:

05

15

25

35

45

55 = 1 WHOLE!

🔥 The most important rule:
When the top number equals the bottom number, the fraction becomes 1 WHOLE!
55 = 1    44 = 1    88 = 1

And if the top is bigger than the bottom? Like 75?
That's MORE than 1 whole — it has a whole hiding inside!

75 = 55 + 25 = 1 whole + 25

🍰 Now you're ready to add! We do it in two steps: wholes first, then fractions!

Adding Mixed Numbers

Let's add: 138 + 28 = ?

1 38

+

28

Step 1 — Add the fractions: 38 + 28 = 58
Step 2 — Keep the whole: We had 1 whole, and 5/8 doesn't make a new whole (5 < 8)

Answer: 158

🍰 The fractions didn't make a whole this time. But sometimes they DO — that's called carry over! You'll see it in the practice! 💪
