Mixed Numbers: Carry Over

Learn what happens when fractions add up to a whole number — and when they don't!

🧮 When you add mixed numbers, sometimes the fractions make an extra whole! Let's see how that works with animations! 🎉

Adding Without Carry Over

🧮 Sometimes the fractions don't make a whole — easy peasy! Let's see…
Example: 2 15 + 1 25
2 15
+
1 25
Step 1: Add the whole numbers: 2 + 1 = 3
Step 2: Add the fractions: 15 + 25 = 35
Check: Is 35 a whole? No! (3 < 5)
Answer: 3 35
🧮 The fraction 35 is LESS than one whole, so nothing carries over. The whole numbers just add up normally! 👍

Adding WITH Carry Over 🎉

🧮 Now the exciting part! What happens when the fractions add up to MORE than one whole?
Example: 2 35 + 1 45
2 35
+
1 45
Step 1: Add the whole numbers: 2 + 1 = 3
Step 2: Add the fractions: 35 + 45 = 75
Check: Is 75 a whole? YES! 7 > 5 💥
Carry over:
75 = 55 + 25 = 1 whole + 25
+1 whole carries over!
Final: 3 wholes + 1 carried = 4 25
🧮 The extra whole "carries over" to the whole numbers! Just like when you add 8 + 5 and carry the 1 in normal addition! 🌟

No Carry vs Carry Over

🧮 Let's compare them side by side so you can see the difference!
✅ No Carry Over
1 26 + 2 16
Wholes: 1 + 2 = 3
Fractions: 26 + 16 = 36
3 < 6 → No carry!
= 3 36
💥 Carry Over!
1 46 + 2 56
Wholes: 1 + 2 = 3
Fractions: 46 + 56 = 96
9 > 6 → Carry over +1!
= 4 36
🧮 The golden rule: if the top number is equal to or bigger than the bottom number, you carry over! 🏆
🧮 Does this one carry over or not? Look at the fractions!

🧮 Work out the answer — watch for carry over!
