Subtracting Fractions!

Learn to take away fractions with the same denominator 🎯

🍉 Hi! I'm Melony! Subtracting fractions is like taking pieces AWAY from a watermelon slice!

Taking Away Pieces 🍉

Imagine a watermelon slice cut into 6 equal pieces.
You have 56 of it — that's 5 pieces!

5/6 — five pieces

Now your friend eats 26 — that's 2 pieces! ✗ ✗

5/6 take away 2 pieces...

Subtracting means taking pieces AWAY. The red ✗ pieces are being removed!

3 pieces left = 36

5 − 2 = 3 on the top. The bottom stays 6!
Answer: 36
🍉 Here's the brilliant rule — it's just like adding, but backwards!

The Subtracting Rule ✨

When the bottom numbers are the same,
just subtract the top numbers!

5828 = ?

5/8

2/8 (take away)

Step 1: Subtract the top: 5 − 2 = 3
Step 2: Keep the bottom: stays 8
Answer: 38 🎉

3 pieces left out of 8 = 3/8

🍉 The bottom number NEVER changes when we subtract fractions with the same denominator! It's like the size of the pieces stays the same — you just have fewer of them!
🍉 What if you take away ALL the pieces? You get zero!

When You Take Everything! 🍉

4747 = ?

4/7

4/7 (take away ALL!)

4 − 4 = 0 on the top. The bottom stays 7.

No pieces left! = 07 = 0

When you take away the same number of pieces you started with, you have nothing left! That's 0!
🍉 Use the bar model to subtract the fractions!

🍉 Great work! Here's another one!
