Subtracting — No Borrow Needed

Let's work out: 258 − 38 = ?

3/8 (take away)

Step 1: Subtract the fractions: 58 − 38 = 28

Step 2: Keep the whole number: 2 wholes stay as 2

Answer: 228

The fraction top was bigger (5 > 3), so no borrowing needed! 🎉

🍰 But what if the fraction you're taking is BIGGER? You need to borrow a whole! 🪄

Borrowing a Whole! 🪄

Let's work out: 226 − 56 = ?

Problem: 2 − 5 on top? You can't take 5 when you only have 2!

🪄 The Borrow Trick: Break one whole (6/6) and add it to the fraction!
2 2/6 → 1 + 66 + 26 = 1 86

Now subtract: 86 − 56 = 36

Subtracting from a Whole Number

Work out: 2 − 23 = ?

There's no fraction part — so we borrow from a whole!

🪄 Turn 2 wholes into 1 whole + 3/3

1 whole + 3/3

The Borrow: 2 = 1 + 33 → now we have 133

Now subtract: 33 − 23 = 13

1 1/3

Answer: 113 🎉
We borrowed one whole, turned it into 3/3, then took away 2/3!
